#1 Wind and Sound
Goals: Moving air. Resonant buzz
Tips: The deep breath should have a low, dark sound. If it helps, start
the sound without the tongue.
Keep everything simple and natural.
#2 Flow
Goals: Relaxed resonance with simple melodic shapes
Tips: Move slide quickly and easily. Keep air flowing smoothly as slide
moves. This results in an
even tone without 'pulsing.' If a piano is handy, accompany the buzz with
tonic/dominant chords.
#3 Basic Lip Slurs
Goals: Embouchure flexibility and accuracy
Tips: Don't slur faster than you can do well. Watch out for throat tension.
#4 Basic Patterns
Goals: Responsive articulation. Slide coordination
Tips: Try buzzing a few of the patterns. In non-legato, don't play too short.
Get right to the 'ah' of 'tah.'
Be very observant of your slide technique - it can always be improved! Yes,
use a metronome.
#5 Long Tones
Goals: Centered tone. Pitch accuracy/stability
Tips: A slight crescendo gives the tone has a musical shape.
Use a metronome and a tuner (but don't stare at the tuner; listen first, then
look)
#6 Simple Tunes
Goals: Good sound. Musical direction. Good tuning.
Tips: Use the chord symbols to accompany yourself on piano (or have a friend
play chord roots).
Try transposing these tunes (tenor clef, 8ve, 8vb, etc.). Buzz or sing first,
then play/
Just as the lower floors of a building support the upper floors, you must regularly work to make sure that your "musical building" has a solid foundation.
